our club & Learn to Skate or "LTS" Program:
If you are looking for beginner youth skating group classes for your child (ages 3 and up), these classes are for you!

Learn to Skate USA, also known as "LTS," is a program developed by US Figure Skating to provide comprehensive training for individuals starting from beginner levels up to the foundational stages of skating. Learn to Skate levels are divided into Snowplow Sam (SS) for ages 3-6. For skaters aged 6 and up, they will start in Basic 1 class and move through all the Basic levels. Once they graduate from Basic 6, they will move into our Aspire Academy.
Our program is located in the scenic locale of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The Skating Club of Jackson Hole (SCJH) offers a dynamic and secure environment where students of all ages and skill levels can enjoy the exhilarating experience of ice skating. As the sole indoor ice skating rink in the area, SCJH takes pride in ensuring an interactive and safe atmosphere for its participants. All of our SCJH instructors have undergone thorough SafeSport and background checks and are duly registered with Learn to Skate USA (LTS), assuring the highest standards of professionalism and expertise.
About Our LTS group Classes Including Dates and Times:
Classes at SCJH Learn to Skate are organized based on age and ability levels. If you're new to skating, we kindly ask you to register your skater for Basic 1 (ages 6 and up) or Snowplow Sam (ages 3-5) programs. Our Learn to Skate group classes go through Basic 6 and take place twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays at our new time: from 4:00 pm to 4:30 pm. As part of your class fee, we offer a supervised Open Skate session from 3:40 pm to 4:00 pm for Basic 1 and above skaters. However, if your skater is at the Snowplow Sam level, they will have a 15-minute off-ice class from 3:45 pm to 4:00 pm (unless they prefer to practice on ice). Please note these are group classes and not one-on-one. If your skater needs one-on-one attention, our coaches do offer private lessons.

We understand that you may have scheduling constraints, so we offer the option of signing up for one day per week if that better suits your needs. *Please note that if your skater is enrolled in one day a week, it may take two or more semesters to pass a level. If your skater wishes to move through the basic levels through Learn to Skate more quickly, please sign them up for twice-a-week classes and take advantage of additional ice opportunities.

Additionally, we provide the option of adding semester skate rental to your registration for a nominal fee, or you may choose to bring your own skates. If you opt for purchasing new skates, we recommend selecting ones that offer ankle support, which can be found on websites like Amazon. We will not allow skates that are unsafe and do not offer any support, such as plastic skates.  In addition we ask that all Snowplow sam and skaters in Hockey skaters wear a helmet at all times, we also strongly encourage all new to skating skaters to wear one as well. Skates, Helmets and more can be found in the Links below.

For further details, including information about what to wear on your skater's first day and whether they can be unattended before and after practice, please refer to the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section below. We strive to provide a comprehensive and enjoyable skating experience for all participants.

 our Policies & Refund Disclaimer:
In this paragraph, we will discuss the key topics regarding SCJH's policy and waivers, which are a part of the registration process. As a valued member of our community and program, SCJH expects skaters and parents to demonstrate humanity, kindness, empathy, and respect. We have a zero-tolerance policy for racism, discrimination, harassment, or hate in any form. SCJH reserves the right to refuse service to skaters or parents who do not adhere to the club's protocols and policies.

It is important to carefully read and understand all the waivers during the registration process. While SCJH strives to accommodate changes and understands that life can be unpredictable, please note that we do not issue refunds or make up classes. We will communicate any updates or changes via email, so please ensure that you provide us with your correct email address for effective communication. Please click HERE for more information on refunds/missed classes. If you would like to learn more about our Ice Time Policy/Freestyle Ice please click HERE. Other Club policies can be found under the about section on this website or during your registration process through Active.
What What Level to Register Your Skater For
*All of our After-school Learn to Skate classes (including hockey) take place on the ice at the same time.

For new skaters, the enrollment process depends on their age. If your skater is between the ages of 3 and 5, they will be registered for the Snowplow Sam class, even if they have been in Snowplow Sam before (Snowplow Sam testing goes up to Snowplow Level 4). If your skater is 6 years old or older at the time of enrollment, they will be registered for Basic 1. It's important to enroll your new Learn to Skate skater in either Basic 1 or Snowplow Sam, even if they have some prior skating experience. We are excited that they have been on the ice before, but they will still need to start at the mentioned levels. If they are ready, we will move them up to the next level without holding them back. Remember, it's easier to progress to higher levels rather than move down.

*For returning skaters who have passed a basic level and received a badge, please enroll them in the next level up. For example, if your skater received a Basic 1 badge, you will enroll them in Basic 2. If you were unable to attend testing, please reach out to us via email, and we will guide you to the appropriate level. It's important not to guess the levels but to communicate with us so we can ensure accurate placement.

Learn how to Make the most of your Skaters Practice Skate Time (3:40-4:00pm):
During the open skate portion your registered skater is welcome to enjoy practicing their skills and mingling with other skaters (this session will start after the first week of skating since we meet with all skaters off the ice for a meet and greet). The 3:40-4pm practice skate time is for registered skaters only (no parents please). In addition, we will be conducting show practice for our Holiday show or Spring Show. If you're interested in participating in the show, you can add the show fees to your class registration. We encourage early registration for the show this season as we will begin practicing during the second week of classes. Detailed information about the show can be found on our website under upcoming events.

All Learn to Skate (LTS) skaters are welcome to register for the show, regardless of whether they are signed up for one day or two days per week (more info is available under the show page).

If your skater wishes to take a private lesson during their open practice/open skate, they are welcome to do so on the days they are registered for class. Please book and pay for private lessons directly with SCJH staff. If you would like to schedule lessons on other days and times, we recommend discussing this with the SCJH coach you are working with or the SCJH director. They will assist you in finding additional lesson times (like on our SCJH freestyle ice from 3:00-3:40). Please note that for any additional lesson times, skaters will need to be enrolled in a lesson and pay the corresponding ice fee.
Frequent asked questions about our lts program
*Can I leave my skater/ Can my skater be at the rink by themselves?
If your skater is in Snowplow Sam or needing help frequent help (like going to the bathroom or tying their skates) we recommend a parent or guardian is at skating. Coaches are unable to leave a class to help with skates and are unable to go into the restroom with a skater due to Safesport policies. If your skater is ridding the bus to the rink that is ok but please understand this time is only partially monitored by a SCJH staff member from 3:00-5:00pm. We will ask all unattended skaters to stay in the warm area from the time they arrive to the time they go on the ice (we will have them go back in the warm area after their group class and wait for pickup).  We will ask that skaters treat the space with respect and aren't running in the building or in the stands as well as cleaning up after themselves.

*What Level Do I Sign My Skater Up For?
If your skater is ages 3-5 during enrollment you will register them in the Snowplow Sam Class, even if the skater was in Snowplow Sam before (Snowplow Sam testing goes to Snowplow level 4).  If Skaters is ages 6 & up at the time of enrollment you will register them for Basic 1.  If your skater has passed a basic level & Received a badge you will enroll them in the next level up.

*My Skater Hasn't Taken Group Classes But Has Skated Before..
We are excited they've been on the ice but, they will need to start in the levels mentioned above. If they are ready we will move them up to the next level, we will not hold your skater back!  Remember it's much easier to move up in levels rather than down. Please reach out to the skating director if you wish to discuss your skaters level.

*Yes To Helmets and Head Protection:
All SNOWPLOW SAM SKATERS, ages 3-6, must wear a helmet. Nothing is to be worn underneath the helmet for proper fitting. Any new skaters to Learn to Skate USA are also encouraged to wear a hat or bring and wear a helmet for the first few class until a comfortable balance is established. We recommend CSA helmets!

*Yes Bring lots of layers.
Comfort and moving freely about are essential for new skaters. Choose sweatpants or warm-up pants for basic 1 and up and snow pants for the snowplow sam skaters. Bring a jacket too, since indoor rinks do set thermostats at a brisk 50 degrees Fahrenheit. We do use marker on the ice so please make sure you wear pants that can get dirty.

*What Socks Do I Put My Skater In?
Thin over thick. Bulkier, thicker socks limit support and movement and create unwanted bumps inside the boots. Go with lightweight socks or thinner tights.

*What Kind Of Gloves?
Gloves are preferable to mittens as they provide articulation. Either way, mittens or gloves are suitable (we do recommend you bring a couple pairs as well.

*Where do you purchase skating gear:
Skate Rental can be added to your registration (or you can pay $5.00 per skate). Skates can be purchased new through sites like amazon (we do suggest all skaters buy skates that have some ankle support). Please do not buy skates that are "floppy" or bendable around the ankle. SCJH does have some used skates available for purchase or  you can purchase new online (we recommend something like these.)

-Be on time & Follow These Steps To Make Group Class Easy-

1. Arrive 15 minutes before your class kicks off. We operate out of the Snow King Event & Sports Center.

2.  Check in at the registration desk.

3. Your skater will receive a name tag & Welcome Packet. On the name tag you will see a color this color will be "their group level/name". Please make sure you leave your skaters name tag on the table after each skate & review the packet.

4. Lace skates up. Skates can be rented for $5.00 from the rink but rentals are not included in the group lesson pricing (You can add semester rentals to your package). Remember to only allow your skaters to walk on protective surfaces, NEVER WALK ON CONCRETE with skates (unless the blades have hard guards). SCJH does have some used skates available for purchase  or we are happy to guide you in the process of  buying a new pair. Helmets required for all Snowplow Sam and hats are recommend for all new skaters.

 5. Students will meet off ice with their instructor - look for the matching color on the name tag to coaches binders.   Coaches will go over class procedures and Cover Policy's. This is also good time to meet and become acquainted with your new instructor and ask any questions you may have. After the first couple of lessons skaters will be allowed to immediately take the ice and open skate till their group class.
