Skating Club of Jackson Hole (SCJH) — Ethics and Respect Policy

SCJH Mission Statement

The Skating Club of Jackson Hole (SCJH) is committed to providing opportunities that promote the enjoyment of ice skating and athletic achievement for skaters of every age and ability.

At SCJH, we believe that respect, responsibility, and integrity are the foundation of a positive skating environment. We follow U.S. Figure Skating and SafeSport rules and guidelines to foster a positive and safe environment that supports athlete growth and well-being. Every skater represents not only themselves, but also their teammates, coaches, and the entire skating community.

This policy outlines our expectations for conduct both on and off the ice.

1. Respect for People: All skaters are expected to treat coaches, staff, fellow skaters, rink employees, parents, and volunteers with kindness and respect at all times.
  • Listen attentively when coaches and staff are speaking.
  • Use polite and encouraging language—no teasing, gossip, or hurtful comments.
  • Follow directions the first time they are given.
  • Maintain a positive attitude during practices, performances, and events.
  • Per SafeSport guidelines, bullying, harassment, or intimidation—whether in person, online, or through texting/social media—will not be tolerated.

2. Respect for Property: The rink and all club facilities are shared spaces. Everyone is responsible for helping keep them safe, clean, and welcoming.
  • Tagging, graffiti, vandalism, or defacing property in any way will not be tolerated and will result in immediate suspension.
  • Do not damage, misuse, or tamper with rink or club equipment.
  • Clean up after yourself and take care of your belongings.
  • Show pride in your club by leaving all spaces better than you found them.

3. Integrity and Sportsmanship: We expect every skater to act with honesty and fairness in all situations.
  • Support and cheer for others—celebrate effort and progress, not just success.
  • Take responsibility for your own actions, both good and bad.
  • If you see something concerning, say something to your primary coach, Skating Director, or another SCJH staff member.
  • Be a role model for younger skaters and represent the club positively at all times.

4. Consequences for Misconduct: The following actions may result in disciplinary measures, depending on the severity of the behavior:
  1. Verbal warning and discussion with a coach or club representative/director.
    • Skaters will be spoken to in a public space in accordance with SafeSport guidelines.
    • If resolved through this meeting, no further action will be taken.
  2. Parent/guardian meeting to discuss the continued behavior or incident and next steps.
  3. Loss of ice or space privileges—the skater may be asked to leave the ice immediately or may be suspended from using a space or ice for a designated period of time. If this happens skaters coach or SCJH director will call skaters parent to discuss what transpired.
  4. Restitution for property damage, which may include volunteer service hours or financial payment.
  5. Suspension or removal from the Skating Club of Jackson Hole for repeated or severe misconduct.
    • If suspension is deemed necessary, the SCJH Director, staff, and president will meet to determine the duration, and the parent will be notified.
    • Upon completion of the suspension, the skater’s parent or a responsible adult may be required to accompany and be present with the skater at the rink for a designated time, as determined at the time of suspension.
    • If the misconduct is deemed severe enough to warrant expulsion, the SCJH Director will meet with the SCJH Board, and a quorum approval will be required.
    • Expulsion decisions will be communicated both verbally to the skater’s parent and in writing. If expulsion is deemed appropriate, the parent may request a meeting with SCJH to review or appeal the decision.
    • SCJH will not issue refunds or prorate fees for time missed due to loss of ice or space privileges, suspension, or expulsion.

Acts of vandalism, property damage, or intentional disrespect toward coaches, staff, or facility employees are considered serious offenses and will be addressed immediately. Again: If you see something, say something!
If damage cannot be repaired through volunteer hours as part of item #4, the parent or guardian of the skater will be required to cover the cost of professional repair or replacement.

5. Our Commitment: SCJH is dedicated to fostering a positive, inclusive, and respectful environment where every skater can thrive. By being part of this club, each skater agrees to uphold the values of respect, responsibility, and integrity both on and off the ice.

Together, we create a community we can all be proud of.
