*Can I leave my skater/ Can my skater be at the rink by themselves?
If your skater is in Snowplow Sam or needing help frequent help (like going to the bathroom or tying their skates) we recommend a parent or guardian is at skating. Coaches are unable to leave a class to help with skates and are unable to go into the restroom with a skater due to Safesport policies. If your skater is ridding the bus to the rink that is ok but please understand this time is not monitored by SCJH staff and we ask that skaters treat the space with respect and aren't running in the building or in the stands as well as cleaning up after themselves. *What Level Do I Sign My Skater Up For? If your skater is ages 3-5 during enrollment you will register them in the Snowplow Sam Class, even if the skater was in Snowplow Sam before (Snowplow Sam testing goes to Snowplow level 4). If Skaters is ages 6 & up at the time of enrollment you will register them for Basic 1. If your skater has passed a basic level & Received a badge you will enroll them in the next level up. *My Skater Hasn't Taken Group Classes But Has Skated Before.. We are excited they've been on the ice but, they will need to start in the levels mentioned above. If they are ready we will move them up to the next level, we will not hold your skater back! Remember it's much easier to move up in levels rather than down. |
*Yes To Helmets and Head Protection:
All SNOWPLOW SAM SKATERS, ages 3-6, must wear a helmet. Nothing is to be worn underneath the helmet for proper fitting. Any new skaters to Learn to Skate USA are also encouraged to wear a hat or bring and wear a helmet for the first few class until a comfortable balance is established. We recommend CSA helmets! *Yes Bring lots of layers. Comfort and moving freely about are essential for new skaters. Choose sweatpants or warm-up pants instead of bulkier snow pants. Bring a jacket too, since indoor rinks do set thermostats at a brisk 50 degrees Fahrenheit. No heavy ski clothes as they prohibit movement and bending. *What Socks Do I Put My Skater In? Thin over thick. Bulkier, thicker socks limit support and movement and create unwanted bumps inside the boots. Go with lightweight socks or thinner tights. *What Kind Of Gloves? Gloves are preferable to mittens as they provide articulation. Either way, mittens or gloves are suitable. *Where do you purchase skating gear: Skate Rental can be added to your registration (or you can pay $5.00 per skate). Skates can be purchased new through sites like amazon (we do suggest all skaters buy skates that have some ankle support). Please do not buy skates that are "floppy" or bendable around the ankle. SCJH does have some used skates available for purchase or you can purchase new online (we recommend something like these.) |
